FAQs

GENERAL

What do you mean by “Natural”?

We recognise that there really aren’t any ‘Natural’ skincare products since these simply don’t exist in nature. When we say our skincare products are natural, it’s our way of saying that we take natural ingredients and blend them together to create nature derived products. Our products contain no petrochemical derivatives, no synthetic dyes and no synthetic preservatives.

What is handmade soap?

Handmade soap refers to soap that is crafted by hand through a traditional, artisanal soap making process, typically using natural and often locally sourced ingredients. Oils are mixed with an alkali and soap forms. Really, it’s that simple. The process of oils being magically converted to soap is called saponification. It’s a process that was first documented around 2800BC in ancient Babylon. Since then the process has been refined and studied, to the point that we’re now able to custom make soaps for specific applications and with well-defined properties.

How do you make your soaps and shampoos?

Our soaps and shampoos are made the old-fashioned way: – with love and mindful attention to details. We handcraft in small batches using the centuries old cold process method. We use no heat in making our soaps and shampoos which ensures that none of the goodness and healing properties of our pure ingredients is destroyed. As with many good things in life, the cold process method is really quite simple. We mix our oils together with a saponification agent which starts the process of turning these raw ingredients into our gorgeous Tallow soaps.

As the raw ingredients start their journey to becoming a natural soap (a process known as saponification), we gently blend in the finest natural essential oils and powders that give our soaps their fabulous fragrance, natural colours and aromatherapy properties. Once the ingredients are blended, and while still in liquid form, the mixture is poured into square moulds in which the liquid will settle and solidify. Once solidified, the soap and shampoo is turned out and the blocks are hand cut to size and our logo stamped. At this stage the bars are moved into a climate controlled drying room in which they are left for four weeks to air dry and harden. Only once the bars are cured, and only if we’re completely satisfied with the quality of the batch, are they hand packed into our recycled kraft paper bags.

The extraordinary properties of Tallow have been known for centuries, but only recently has research supported its relevance to skin care.

Tallow is often used in skincare products because it can be beneficial for the skin, but its primary value in skincare is as a moisturizer and skin barrier support.

Studies have shown that tallow helps promote skin cell regeneration, which allows our skin to renew and regenerate itself more quickly.

The essential fatty acids in tallow help keep our skin healthy and hydrated by acting as a natural sealant that locks moisture into the skin. Tallow also helps reduce dryness, increase skin flexibility, and improve our protective skin barrier functioning.

In addition to Tallow we use:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Castor Oil
  • Organic Essential Oils (Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemongrass, Patchouli, Rose Geranium, Sweet Orange)
  • Food grade Organic powders (Activated Charcoal, Alkanet Root, Rose Petal, Sidr, Spirulina, Turmeric)

I like liquid soap/ shampoo, why should I use a bar soap/ shampoo?

The answer is quite simple. To make a liquid natural soap and shampoo, you need to add preservatives in order to prevent it from degrading and going off. The longer you want the liquid soap/shampoo to stay fresh, the more preservatives you need to add. We’re truly committed to producing all-natural products, and the required preservatives just don’t meet this commitment. The choice is yours.

How long should my bar of soap/ shampoo last?

That depends on how often its used and how its cared for. If properly stored and drained between uses, you can typically expect a bar to last at least 4-5 weeks or longer.

To care for your soap and make it last longer:

  • Place your bar on a soap dish that keeps it from standing in water.
  • Avoid leaving soap and shampoo in a direct spray of water as this will dissolve it much faster.
  • Ideally, allow your bar to dry completely between use.
  • Try using a wash-cloth, jute bag instead of rubbing soap directly on your skin.

Is your soap/ shampoo ‘Tearless’?

While our soaps and shampoos are gentle, no real handmade soap and shampoo is “Tearless.” We recommend that you avoid getting the soap/ shampoo in your eyes. If you do get lather in your eye, flush the eye with tepid water. Rest assured, however, that apart from a mild stinging, you will not suffer any harm.

Do you test your products on animals?

No, we absolutely do not.
All of our products are tested on very willing friends and family, including our dog Charlie 😀

Can I wash my hair with your soap?

Absolutely! BUT your hair likely must transition to a natural soap after using standard shampoos for many years (more below).

However, we have formulated shampoo bars for humans and pets.

The thing about washing your hair with bar soap is that its effectiveness is down to a whole host of factors:

  • Your hair length
  • Your scalp type and sensitivity
  • The water quality and hardness
  • How you wash your hair, and
  • What you’ve previously used to wash your hair

Commercial shampoos contain synthetic chemicals, which strip hair of natural oils and dry your hair and scalp, so commercial conditioner is needed. Since natural shampoo bars do not strip hair of its natural oils, you won't need the commercial conditioner that you would normally use.

Switching to a natural, chemical-free shampoo bar can be a process for some people. Your hair might need to go through a detox process. Our natural shampoo bars contain no detergents, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, formaldehyde, preservatives, artificial fragrance, colorants, or any other synthetic hair care chemicals and additives.

Conventional shampoos contain synthetic ingredients and waxes designed to make your hair feel smooth. Our natural shampoo bars do not contain waxes, chemicals, additives, or other synthetic ingredients, so your hair might feel different after washing because you are used to chemical and detergent-based shampoos.

Your transition will likely require an adjustment period. Everyone’s hair is different, so every person’s adjustment period may vary. Some people may take a few days to transition, while others may take a few weeks. Your hair will need that time to go through the withdrawal phase, to adjust to shampoo without those additives.

During the transition period, it should help to use a vinegar rinse. An apple cider vinegar rinse can help remove the chemical residue and build-up from previous products. Combine three tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar with about thirty grams of warm water in a cup. After washing and rinsing your hair, pour the rinse onto your wet hair. You can immediately rinse the vinegar out of your hair.

This vinegar rinse resets the pH of your hair back to its natural happy place, which will leave it looking and feeling shiny, smooth, and beautiful. Since the vinegar restores a natural pH, it also helps prevent an itchy scalp. Dry hair requires a little less vinegar and oily requires a little more.

Why does my soap/ shampoo look different from the last time I ordered?

We craft every bar of soap and shampoo with care and by hand. No two bars are ever the same; sometimes our cuts may be a little less than perfectly straight, our logo may be stamped a little off centre or the soap/ shampoo may be a slightly different shade – that’s handcrafted for you.

ABOUT TALLOW

A time-honored tradition in soap making

Throughout history, soap has been an essential element of hygiene and skincare. The craft of soap making has evolved significantly over time, but one ingredient has remained a steadfast presence for its remarkable properties.

Tallow, derived from animal fats, has played a pivotal role in soap production for centuries, and its history is a testament to the enduring legacy of traditional soap making.

Tallow's association with soap production can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where it was recognized for its potential as a key ingredient in soap. The Egyptians, Babylonians, and Romans were among the early cultures to appreciate its qualities. Its prominence in these societies was not only due to its availability but also because of the unique properties that made it an exceptional choice for soap.

In the Middle Ages, tallow's role in soap making became even more pronounced. It was readily available and affordable, making it accessible to a wide range of people. Tallow, primarily sourced from animal fat, especially from cows and sheep, became synonymous with soap production during this era.

The traditional soap-making process involved combining tallow with an alkali. This chemical reaction, known as saponification, transformed the fat and alkali into soap, with glycerine as a valuable byproduct. The resulting soap was known for its durability, longevity, and excellent cleansing properties, making it a preferred choice for personal hygiene, laundry, and household cleaning.

Tallow-based soap was especially popular in regions where animal husbandry thrived, as it provided an eco-friendly solution to utilizing animal fat that might otherwise go to waste. The efficient removal of dirt, grease, and grime from the skin and various surfaces made tallow soap an indispensable part of daily life.

However, as soap-making techniques evolved, and with the industrial revolution, vegetable and plant based oils gained popularity due to their properties and potential benefits for the skin. The shift towards these alternatives marked a transition in soap production, but it did not diminish tallow's historical significance.

In recent years, a resurgence of interest in traditional soap crafting methods, including tallow soap, has emerged.

Some individuals appreciate the historical importance and the unique attributes that tallow can bring to soap formulations. It offers a connection to the past and a return to natural, time-honored ingredients in skincare.

It's worth noting that tallow soap may not suit everyone, as consumers often prefer plant-based alternatives for various reasons, including personal beliefs, lifestyle choices, or specific skin preferences. The beauty of the contemporary skincare landscape is the diversity of choices available to consumers.

Today, tallow soap continues to be produced and cherished, particularly by enthusiasts of traditional soap recipes and those who value its historical relevance and distinct properties. Its popularity and availability may vary based on cultural, regional, and individual preferences, but it remains a testament to the enduring legacy of tallow in the world of soap making.

Tallow’s role in soap making is a reflection of the historical evolution of skincare practices. Its rich history and exceptional properties have made it a valuable ingredient in soap production. Though modern alternatives have emerged, the enduring popularity of tallow in soap making reminds us of the timeless beauty of traditional, time-tested ingredients in the world of skincare.

What are the unique features of tallow??

Fatty Acid Composition: Tallow is composed of a complex mixture of fatty acids, each with distinct benefits for skincare. One of its primary components is oleic acid, known for its moisturizing properties. Oleic acid helps maintain skin's natural moisture balance, leaving it soft and supple. Additionally, tallow contains palmitic acid, which contributes to the hardness and longevity of soap bars. These fatty acids, when saponified with alkali, create a soap that cleanses while keeping the skin hydrated and well-nourished.

Natural Glycerin: One of the remarkable characteristics of tallow-based soap is the retention of natural glycerin. Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts moisture from the environment and holds it against the skin. This makes tallow soaps exceptionally hydrating. Commercially manufactured soaps often remove glycerin during processing and replace it with synthetic additives. Tallow-based soaps, on the other hand, preserve this valuable natural moisturizer, providing a gentle, moisturizing cleansing experience.

Nourishing and Softening: Tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as antioxidants, which can nourish and revitalize the skin. It can help soften rough or dry skin, leaving it feeling smoother and more supple.

Rich Lather: Tallow-based soaps are renowned for their luxurious lather. Tallow's unique fatty acid composition, especially stearic acid, contributes to the creation of a rich, creamy lather that effectively lifts away dirt and impurities from the skin. This creamy lather ensures a thorough yet gentle cleanse, leaving the skin feeling refreshed.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Tallow contains anti-inflammatory compounds, such as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which may help soothe and calm irritated or inflamed skin. It can be beneficial for individuals with sensitive skin or inflammatory skin conditions.

Environmental Sustainability: Tallow, as a soap ingredient, is not only beneficial for the skin but also environmentally friendly. It is a renewable resource, as it is derived from animal fat, a byproduct of the meat industry. Utilizing tallow in soap production helps reduce waste and promotes sustainability. Furthermore, tallow-based soaps can be made without additives and packaged using eco-friendly materials, further reducing their environmental impact.

Is tallow ethical and sustainable?

Tallow is often considered ethical and sustainable due to several reasons related to its production and use. Here are some points highlighting the ethical and sustainable aspects of tallow:

Byproduct of the Meat Industry: Tallow is primarily derived from the fat of animals, such as cows or sheep, that are raised for meat consumption. It is a byproduct of the meat industry, utilizing a part of the animal that would otherwise go to waste. Using tallow helps maximize the use of the animal and reduces overall waste in the process.

Animal Welfare Considerations: Ethical sourcing of tallow emphasizes the importance of ensuring the animals are raised and treated in a humane manner. This includes providing appropriate living conditions, access to open spaces, and proper nutrition. Supporting responsible and transparent sourcing practices ensures that animal welfare is prioritized throughout the supply chain.

Sustainable Production: Tallow has a relatively low environmental impact compared to some synthetic alternatives. Its production requires fewer resources and energy compared to the manufacturing processes of certain petroleum-based or plant-derived ingredients. Additionally, tallow is a renewable resource as long as animal agriculture is managed responsibly and sustainably.

Biodegradability: Tallow is biodegradable, meaning it can break down naturally over time without causing long-term environmental harm. When disposed of properly, it does not contribute to pollution or add to the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste in landfills or water bodies.

Versatility and Reduced Need for Synthetic Ingredients: Tallow's versatility as an ingredient in various products, such as soap and cosmetics, can reduce the reliance on synthetic ingredients derived from petrochemicals. By incorporating tallow into formulations, the need for certain petroleum-based or chemically synthesized components may be reduced.

It's important to note that ethical and sustainable considerations may vary among different producers and sources. Understanding the specific practices and standards employed by the suppliers or brands you choose to support is crucial in determining the overall ethical and sustainable impact of tallow-based products.

Why are you using only few ingredients?

Less is More: The power of simplicity in ingredients for food and skincare.

In a world where the abundance of choices often overwhelms us, there is a growing appreciation for the principle of "less is more." This principle applies to both the food we consume and the skincare products we use. Embracing simplicity and minimalism when it comes to ingredients can bring numerous benefits for our well-being. Here's why:

Transparency and Understanding: When products have a shorter list of ingredients, it becomes easier for consumers to understand what they are using. Instead of a long list of unfamiliar or complex names, simpler ingredient lists promote transparency and allow us to make informed choices about what we put in our bodies or apply to our skin.

Reduced Sensitivity and Allergic Reactions: The more ingredients a product contains, the higher the likelihood of encountering an ingredient that may trigger sensitivities or allergies. By opting for products with fewer ingredients, we minimize the risk of adverse reactions and sensitivities, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin or specific dietary restrictions.

Focus on Quality: By prioritizing quality over quantity, we allow each ingredient to shine and deliver its intended benefits. Instead of diluting a product with numerous additives or fillers, a minimalist approach allows the chosen ingredients to take center stage, maximizing their potential effectiveness and delivering a higher quality experience.

Minimized Environmental Impact: A simplified ingredient list often translates to a reduced environmental impact. By opting for products with fewer ingredients, we decrease the demand for complex supply chains and resource-intensive processes. Additionally, simpler formulations can lead to less packaging waste and a reduced carbon footprint.

Customizability and Personalization: Simplified ingredients leave room for customization and personalization. With fewer components, it becomes easier to adapt products to individual needs, preferences, or specific dietary restrictions. Whether it's tailoring a recipe or finding a skincare product that suits your unique skin concerns, simplicity allows for greater flexibility.

Focus on Essential Nutrients: By embracing a "less is more" approach, we prioritize essential nutrients and active compounds that truly benefit our bodies and skin. This shift enables us to focus on wholesome, nutrient-dense ingredients that provide nourishment, hydration, and support for optimal health and skincare.

Ultimately, the "less is more" philosophy encourages us to be mindful consumers and prioritize quality, transparency, and simplicity in our choices. Whether it's the food we eat or the skincare products we use, embracing fewer, well-chosen ingredients can lead to a more satisfying, effective, and environmentally conscious lifestyle.

Do you use LYE for your soaps?

Lye, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a highly alkaline substance commonly used in the soap-making process. While lye itself is caustic and can cause harm if mishandled or used improperly, it undergoes a chemical reaction during soap-making called saponification. This reaction transforms lye and oils/fats into soap.

The benefits of lye in skincare are primarily associated with the resulting soap. Here are some potential advantages of lye-based soap for skin care:

Cleansing: Lye-based soap effectively cleanses the skin by removing dirt, oil, and impurities. It helps to wash away pollutants and bacteria, leaving the skin feeling fresh and clean.

Gentle and Balanced: When properly made, lye-based soap can have a pH level that is close to the natural pH of the skin, which is slightly acidic. This helps to maintain the skin's natural barrier function and acid mantle, keeping the skin balanced and less prone to dryness or irritation.

Moisturizing: Lye-based soaps can be formulated with moisturizing oils and butters, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or shea butter. These ingredients can help hydrate and nourish the skin, leaving it feeling soft and supple.

Natural Ingredients: Lye-based soap can be made using natural and plant-derived oils and fats, offering a more natural alternative to synthetic cleansers. This can be appealing to individuals who prefer to use skincare products with minimal additives and chemicals.

Versatility: Lye-based soap can be customized with various additives, such as essential oils, herbs, or exfoliants, to provide additional benefits for the skin. These additives can contribute to aromatherapeutic effects, provide gentle exfoliation, or offer specific properties, depending on the chosen ingredients.

It's important to note that lye should be handled with caution during the soap-making process, and safety measures should be followed. However, once the saponification process is complete, and the soap is properly cured, lye is no longer present in the final product. This makes lye-based soap safe for use on the skin.

As with any skincare product, individual experiences may vary, and it's important to consider personal sensitivities and preferences. If you have specific skin concerns or conditions, it's advisable to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional for personalized advice.
